Hochosterwitz Castle: Climbing Through 14 Gates

Carinthia's most famous castle on its rock

Hochosterwitz Castle: Climbing Through 14 GatesFamilyKärnten
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

This private excursion takes you up to Hochosterwitz Castle, perched on a limestone rock above Carinthia's Zollfeld plain. The path to the top leads through 14 castle gates, each with its own story.

Hochosterwitz has belonged to the Khevenhüller family since the 16th century, and they turned it into a fortress against the Ottomans. The 14 gates along the castle path were meant to stop attackers, with drawbridges, portcullises and arrow slits.

Your guide walks you up gate by gate and explains how the defenses worked and what legends surround the castle, such as the siege by Margarete Maultasch. At the top you find the courtyard, chapel, armory and a broad view over central Carinthia.

The excursion is private and planned around your group. We are happy to discuss transport, how long you would like to spend at each stop and where to take breaks before the day.

Frequently asked questions

Are entrance fees included?

No. Entrance fees for the castle and the inclined lift are not included in the tour price and are paid on site. Your guide will let you know in advance which tickets you will need.

How is the price calculated?

This is a private tour, so you pay one price per group, not per person. The amount depends on the duration and group size, and you receive a quote with your request.

Do we have to walk up?

The gate path is the most beautiful way up, but it is steep. An inclined lift is the alternative; the ride is not included.
