In short: From mid November, Christmas and Advent markets open all over Austria. They are at their best in the late afternoon when the lights come on, and with a guide who explains where traditions such as the Advent wreath, Krampus or fruit bread come from.
Vienna
The market in front of City Hall is the best known, while Spittelberg, Karlsplatz and Schönbrunn are quieter and often more atmospheric. Dates and all markets are listed by the Vienna Tourist Board.
Salzburg and the Salzkammergut
The Christkindlmarkt on Cathedral and Residence Square is one of the oldest in Austria. On Lake Wolfgang, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl link their markets by boat. More from Tourismus Salzburg.
