Advent at Lake Wolfgang is one of Austria's most atmospheric Christmas market experiences, with markets in St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl. This private tour explains old Salzkammergut customs and shows the loveliest spots on the winter lake.
During Advent a giant lantern floats on the lake at St. Wolfgang, and craftspeople around the pilgrimage church sell nativity figures, pottery and woodwork. Brass players perform from the church tower while baked apples scent the air.
Your guide explains customs such as Anklöckeln caroling, the Rauhnächte, the twelve mystical nights around New Year, and the nativity tradition of the Salzkammergut. You learn why Krampus and Saint Nicholas matter so much here.
On request you travel by boat between the villages when the Advent service is running, and see the lake from its quiet side. Mulled wine and treats are paid directly at the stalls.
