During Advent Steyr is a special place, with a Christ Child who has his own church and his own post office. Your guide combines the beautiful old town with these traditions.
Steyr's town square is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Austria, with the Gothic Bummerlhaus and the baroque town hall. Your guide explains how Steyr grew rich through the iron trade and why the town sits where the Enns and Steyr rivers meet.
Just outside town stands the pilgrimage church of Christkindl, built around a small figure of the Christ Child venerated since the late 17th century. During Advent the Christmas post office next to it stamps letters from all over the world with a special postmark. Nativity scenes play a big role in Steyr, and the Steyrer Kripperl, a traditional rod puppet theatre, is one of the town's treasures.
