Ausseerland: Salt, Lakes and Literature

Bad Aussee and Altaussee in the Styrian Salzkammergut

Ausseerland: Salt, Lakes and Literature
Duration
3.0 hours
Languages
German, English

This private excursion shows you the Ausseerland in the Styrian Salzkammergut, with Bad Aussee, Lake Altaussee and the salt mine. You will hear why writers spent their summers here and how the Altaussee salt mine sheltered art treasures during World War II.

Bad Aussee lies at the geographic center of Austria, marked by a stone in the spa park. Salt brought the town wealth for centuries, and the Kammerhof recalls the old salt administration. Archduke Johann found his great love here, the postmaster's daughter Anna Plochl.

In Altaussee the Loser and Trisselwand mountains are mirrored in the lake, and authors such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Arthur Schnitzler and Friedrich Torberg spent their summers here. Your guide also tells how artworks from across Europe were stored and rescued inside the salt mountain during the war.

The excursion is private and planned around your group. We are happy to discuss transport, how long you would like to spend at each stop and where to take breaks before the day.
