This private walking tour of Baden bei Wien shows one of Europe's great spa towns. You see Biedermeier architecture, the spa park and the house where Beethoven worked on his Ninth Symphony.
The Romans already valued Baden's warm sulfur springs. But the town's golden age came in the 19th century, when Emperor Franz I spent every summer here with his court. After a fire in 1812, Baden was rebuilt in elegant Biedermeier style.
Since 2021 Baden has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Great Spa Towns of Europe. Around the main square with its Trinity Column stand neoclassical houses, pump rooms and bathhouses. In the Beethoven House the composer spent a summer in 1823 working on the Ninth.
Your guide leads you through lanes and the spa park, tells of the glamorous summers of Viennese society and shows where thermal water still bubbles up today. On request you can finish with a walk to the rose garden.
