This private family trip to Kreuzenstein Castle leads into a knight's castle straight out of a picture book. Kids explore the armory, chapel and courtyard and learn how a count turned a ruin into a museum of the Middle Ages.
Kreuzenstein Castle sits on a wooded hill near Leobendorf, north of Vienna. The medieval castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and lay in ruins for a long time. From 1874 Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek rebuilt it over three decades.
Wilczek collected real medieval parts from all over Europe, such as gates, oriels, wooden ceilings and windows, and built them into his castle. Inside he displayed weapons, armor, furniture and everyday objects of the Middle Ages. The result is a castle that looks as if it had never been abandoned. No wonder film crews like to use it as a set.
Your guide tells kids about the life of knights, squires and ladies, sets riddles and invites children from about six to become castle detectives.
