Forchtenstein Castle: Treasury of the Esterházy

Weapons, a cabinet of curiosities and princely splendor

Forchtenstein Castle: Treasury of the EsterházyFamilyBurgenland
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

This private tour takes you to Forchtenstein Castle in the Rosalia hills, the treasury of the Esterházy princes. You see one of the largest historic weapons collections in private hands and a Baroque cabinet of curiosities.

The Esterházy family turned Forchtenstein into a mighty fortress in the 17th century and used it as a safe place for their treasures. Weapons, armor, spoils from the Ottoman wars and family portraits were kept here and can still be seen today.

Your guide leads you through the portrait gallery, armory and treasury and shows curiosities from the cabinet, from clockwork pieces to exotic finds. You will hear how the Esterházy became one of the richest families in Hungary and what role the castle played in the borderland.

This is a private tour: just your own group, your pace and plenty of time for questions. Our licensed guides are happy to adjust the focus to your interests before the day.
