Around 1,800 years ago tens of thousands of people lived in Carnuntum. Your guide brings the Roman city between Vienna and Bratislava back to life.
Carnuntum was a legionary fortress, a trading centre and the capital of the province of Upper Pannonia. Emperors came here, and in the year 308 several rulers met in Carnuntum for a famous imperial conference. Your guide explains what life was like on the edge of the empire, from soldiers to wealthy merchants.
In the Archaeological Park, houses have been rebuilt on their original foundations using ancient techniques. You step into a villa, a bath house and homes and see how underfloor heating and wall painting worked. The Heidentor, a mighty 4th-century monument, is the symbol of the region.
The tour works well as a day trip from Vienna and for families and school groups. The tour is private and priced per group.
