Feldkirch in Vorarlberg is one of Austria's best preserved medieval towns, watched over by Schattenburg Castle. This private walk tells of the Counts of Montfort, the trade route over the Arlberg and writers who left their mark here.
The Counts of Montfort founded Feldkirch in the 13th century and built Schattenburg as their family seat. Today it is a Vorarlberg landmark with a museum and views across the old town roofs.
Arcades along Marktgasse, town gates such as the Chur Gate and the Katzenturm with its great bell reveal the medieval layout. St. Nicholas Cathedral is a late Gothic hall church with remarkable windows.
Arthur Conan Doyle attended the Jesuit school Stella Matutina as a young man, and James Joyce stayed in Feldkirch several times. Your guide weaves such anecdotes into the town's role on the border with Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
