This private wine tour in Gumpoldskirchen introduces two grape varieties found almost only in the Thermenregion. Among winemakers' houses, vineyards and the castle of the Teutonic Order, you discover one of Lower Austria's best-known wine villages.
Gumpoldskirchen lies on the edge of the Vienna Woods, where warm Pannonian air meets limestone-rich soils. This is home to Zierfandler and Rotgipfler, two native varieties that are often blended as Spätrot-Rotgipfler and make rich, spicy white wines.
Since the Middle Ages the Teutonic Order has shaped the village. Its castle still stands in the center, next to the Gothic parish church and the long winemakers' houses with their courtyards. Many families have run their wine taverns here for generations.
Your guide leads you along the wine trail into the vineyards, explains soils, climate and winegrowing, and invites you to a tasting at a winery. The view stretches far across the Vienna Basin.
