A medieval border town with almost complete fortifications

This private walking tour of Hainburg on the Danube shows one of the best-preserved medieval town fortifications in Europe. Walls, towers and the mighty Vienna Gate tell the story of a border town between East and West.
Hainburg lies on Austria's eastern edge, where the Danube and the hills form a natural bottleneck. In the Middle Ages the Babenberg dukes secured this crossing, and around the town they built a wall about two and a half kilometers long that is almost completely preserved today.
Three town gates still stand. The Vienna Gate is one of the largest medieval gate buildings in Europe, the Fisher Gate led to the Danube and the Hungarian Gate to the east. Above the town rise the ruins of the castle on the Schlossberg. In 1683 Hainburg was badly hit during the Ottoman war.
Your guide tells of sieges, trade and daily life, and of a famous pupil: as a boy Joseph Haydn lived with relatives in Hainburg for a few years and had his first music lessons here.
