Innsbruck: Imperial Palace, Court Church and the Black Men

Emperor Maximilian, Maria Theresa and Andreas Hofer

Innsbruck: Imperial Palace, Court Church and the Black Men
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

Under Emperor Maximilian I, Innsbruck was one of the power centers of Europe, and the Court Church with his tomb and the bronze Black Men is a Renaissance masterpiece. This private tour also visits Maria Theresa's Imperial Palace.

For his tomb, Maximilian I planned a procession of bronze ancestors and heroes. Twenty-eight larger-than-life figures, nicknamed the Black Men, now surround the empty cenotaph in the Court Church, as the emperor was finally buried in Wiener Neustadt.

Andreas Hofer, leader of the Tyrolean uprising of 1809, also rests in the Court Church. Your guide explains why he remains a symbol for Tyrol and how his grave came to be here.

Next door stands the Imperial Palace, remodeled by Maria Theresa in Baroque and Rococo style. The Giant Hall with portraits of the imperial family recalls both a wedding and a death, as her husband Francis Stephen died in Innsbruck in 1765.
