This private tour reveals the little-known Jewish history of Salzburg, from the medieval Jewish lane to the present day. It also focuses on Stefan Zweig, who lived here for many years, and on remembrance of the Nazi era.

Judengasse in the old town recalls the medieval Jewish community. In 1498 Jews were expelled from the archbishopric under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, and a new community only formed in the 19th century.

Stefan Zweig lived from 1919 to 1934 in the Paschinger Schlössl on the Kapuzinerberg, hosting guests from across Europe. Your guide tells of his life, his friendships with Salzburg artists and his escape.

In 1938 the Nazis burned books on Residence Square, and a memorial marks the spot. Stolpersteine, small brass memorial stones outside homes, name people who were persecuted. The tour ends with a look at Jewish life in Salzburg today.
