Kitzbühel: Old Town, Mining and the Streif

From mining town to legendary ski resort

Kitzbühel: Old Town, Mining and the StreifHighlightsTirol
Duration
1.5 hours
Languages
German, English

Kitzbühel in Tyrol is world famous for the Hahnenkamm race on the Streif, yet its old town is more than 700 years old. This private walk shows how a medieval mining town became one of the best known winter sports resorts on earth.

Kitzbühel received its town charter in 1271 and grew wealthy on copper and silver mining. The colorful gabled houses of the Vorderstadt and Hinterstadt still follow their medieval layout.

The Church of Our Lady and the parish church of St. Andrew stand close together on the slope. Your guide tells of the miners' lives and of Franz Reisch, who climbed the Kitzbüheler Horn on skis in the late 19th century and brought skiing to town.

The famous downhill race has been held on the Hahnenkamm since 1931, and the Streif is regarded as one of the toughest courses in the world. From town you see the finish slope and hear tales of champions and crashes.
