Krems has been a wine town since the Middle Ages. Your guide leads you into cellar lanes and explains why the area ranks among Austria's most important wine regions.
Many monasteries and abbeys from all over the country owned vineyards and harvest estates in and around Krems. Your guide shows you where these estates stood and tells how wine was shipped on the Danube. On request the Museum Krems, housed in a former Dominican monastery, offers a deeper look.
In the cellar lanes on the edge of town you see the typical press houses, behind which deep cellars are dug into the loess. You will learn why loess is so valuable for growing and storing wine and what sets the Kremstal apart from the Kamptal and the Wachau.
The tour ends with a tasting at a winery, ideally Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. On request we add a castle winery in the nearby Kamptal. The tour is private and priced per group.
