Kufstein on the Bavarian border is crowned by its mighty fortress, where the Heroes' Organ rings out over the town around noon. This private tour combines fortress history, music and the lanes of the old town.
Over the centuries the fortress changed hands between Bavaria and Tyrol. Emperor Maximilian I captured it in 1504 and built the massive Emperor's Tower. Later it served as a state prison for political prisoners.
The Citizens' Tower houses the Heroes' Organ, built in memory of those who fell in World War I. It is regarded as the largest open-air organ in the world, and its sound carries for miles through the Inn Valley.
Down in the old town, Römerhofgasse with its painted houses and wine taverns leads to the river. Your guide also tells the story of the Kufstein Song that made the town famous worldwide. An inclined lift makes the climb easy.
