Lech am Arlberg: Walser Heritage, Ski Pioneers and the Skyspace
A mountain village between tradition and light art

- Duration
- 2.0 hours
- Languages
- German, English
Lech am Arlberg is one of the most famous ski resorts in the Alps and also an old Walser village. This private walk combines local history, the birth of alpine skiing and the Skyspace by light artist James Turrell.
In the 14th century Walser settlers from the Swiss Valais moved into the high valley and carved farms out of the harsh climate. The Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas with its distinctive tower is still the heart of the village.
Around 1900 pioneers discovered the Arlberg for skiing, and the Ski Club Arlberg was founded in 1901. Lech and Zürs became world-renowned, yet they still deliberately limit their size and protect their architecture.
Above the village lies Skyspace Lech, a walk-in light space by James Turrell where the sky changes like a painting. In summer the walk crosses flowering mountain meadows, in winter a deep snowy landscape.
