Millstatt: Abbey, Cloister and Lake

Romanesque art and summer life on Lake Millstatt

Millstatt: Abbey, Cloister and Lake
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

This private tour shows you Millstatt on Lake Millstatt, Carinthia's deepest lake, with its former Benedictine abbey. The Romanesque cloister, church portal and lakeside promenade make it one of the loveliest spots in Upper Carinthia.

Millstatt Abbey was founded in the 11th century as a Benedictine monastery and later passed to the Order of St. George and then to the Jesuits. Its best-known features are the Romanesque cloister with finely carved columns and the west portal of the church with figures and mythical beasts.

Your guide explains the stories hidden in the stone and talks about the large Last Judgment fresco in the church. Then you head down to the shore, where villas and bathhouses recall 19th-century summer life. At more than 140 meters, Lake Millstatt is the deepest lake in Carinthia.

This is a private tour: just your own group, your pace and plenty of time for questions. Our licensed guides are happy to adjust the focus to your interests before the day.
