Rattenberg in the Tyrolean lowlands is considered the smallest town in Austria and is known for glass art and medieval houses. This private walk shows how the town between river and cliff has kept its charm.
Rattenberg grew rich on mining and trade along the Inn and was long a border fortress between Bavaria and Tyrol. Its houses, with their distinctive recessed roofs and oriel windows, mostly date from the Middle Ages and stand shoulder to shoulder.
Behind the town rises the castle hill with its ruins. It is so high that parts of the town get no direct sun for weeks in winter. Your guide explains the unusual ideas people have tried to change that.
Today Rattenberg is known for its glass shops and engraving workshops, where you can watch craftspeople at work. The Augustinian Museum with sacred art and the Gothic parish church are also along the way.
