Salzburg of the Prince-Archbishops: Cathedral and DomQuartier

Power, faith and Baroque in the Rome of the North

Salzburg of the Prince-Archbishops: Cathedral and DomQuartier
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

Salzburg owes its Baroque cityscape to the prince-archbishops who ruled here for centuries as both church and state leaders. This private tour tells the stories of Wolf Dietrich, Markus Sittikus and Paris Lodron and visits the cathedral and the DomQuartier.

With wealth from salt, the archbishops rebuilt their city on Italian models. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had much of the medieval town torn down to make way for squares, palaces and a new cathedral.

The cathedral was consecrated in 1628 under Paris Lodron. Mozart was baptized here and later played as organist. Bridges and passages link the Residence, the cathedral and St. Peter's Abbey into the DomQuartier, a unique route through the princes' world.

Your guide shows Residence Square with its fountain, Chapter Square and Cathedral Square with its three arches. You learn how Salzburg only became part of Austria for good in 1816 and what remains of the princes' splendor.
