Salzburg's City Mountains: Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg
A panoramic hike above the old town rooftops

- Duration
- 2.5 hours
- Languages
- German, English
The Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg frame Salzburg's old town and offer the finest views of the cathedral, the fortress and the Salzach River. This private hike combines nature in the middle of the city with stories of walls, monks and writers.
On the Mönchsberg, paths wind through woods and meadows to viewpoints such as the Richterhöhe. Old defensive walls and towers recall that the hill was part of the city fortifications, and the Museum of Modern Art sits right above the old town.
After descending, you cross the Salzach and climb the Kapuzinerberg, the green counterpart. Stations of the Cross lead up to the Capuchin monastery, and higher up stand the Franziskischlössl and lookouts facing the fortress.
Stefan Zweig lived on the Kapuzinerberg, and with luck you may see the wild chamois that roam here. The hike is moderate with some steps, so good shoes are recommended. The Mönchsberg elevator can be used for the first climb.
