Salzburg Advent and Christmas Market

Festive lights between cathedral and residence, and the story of Silent Night

Salzburg Advent and Christmas MarketTopicSalzburg
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

During Advent Salzburg shows its most atmospheric side. Your guide combines the Christmas market with the story of the world's most famous carol.

On Cathedral Square and Residence Square you find one of Austria's most traditional Christmas markets. Among stalls with nativity scenes, candles and gingerbread, your guide tells you about local Advent customs, from carol singers to Perchten and Krampus.

A highlight is the story of Silent Night. The lyrics were written by Joseph Mohr, born in Salzburg, and the melody by Franz Xaver Gruber. The carol was first performed in 1818 in Oberndorf near Salzburg. You will see places from Mohr's life in the old town and hear how the song travelled around the world.

On request we add the Advent market at Hellbrunn or at the fortress. The tour is private and priced per group.
