This private family trip to the Seegrotte Hinterbrühl leads into a former gypsum mine with one of Europe's largest underground lakes. Kids enjoy a boat ride deep underground and learn how a mine turned into a lake.
Gypsum was mined for a long time in Hinterbrühl on the edge of the Vienna Woods. In 1912 a blast hit a water vein, and millions of liters of water flooded the lower tunnels. The result was an underground lake that is now explored by boat.
During World War II the mine was used for armaments production, and aircraft parts were built here underground. Later the grotto became a film set, including for a version of The Three Musketeers. Today tunnels, tools and stories of pit ponies show the daily life of the miners.
Your guide prepares the kids in a playful way, explains rock, water and mining and answers every question. Afterwards there is time for a walk in Hinterbrühl or a detour to Liechtenstein Castle.
