Semmering Railway: Day Trip to a World Heritage Mountain Line
Viaducts, tunnels and summer retreats in the mountains

- Duration
- 7.0 hours
- Languages
- German, English
This private day trip to the Semmering Railway combines railway history, mountain scenery and the summer retreats of Viennese society. The Semmering Railway was the first mountain railway in the world to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Between 1848 and 1854 Carl Ritter von Ghega built the line over the Semmering Pass, Europe's first standard-gauge mountain railway. Some 20,000 workers built tunnels, galleries and daring viaducts that blend beautifully into the landscape. In 1998 the line became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The railway brought the guests: Viennese families spent their summers in villas and grand hotels such as the Südbahnhotel and the Panhans. Artists, writers and industrialists turned Semmering into a fashionable meeting place.
Your guide combines a train ride with a hike on the railway trail to the best viewpoints, such as the viaduct over the Kalte Rinne. Along the way you hear about Ghega, the workers and the golden age of summer retreats.
