Spitz lies at the heart of the Wachau, surrounded by vineyards. Your guide shows you a village that lives from wine and the Danube.
The Tausendeimerberg rises right behind the village. Its name, the thousand-bucket hill, is said to come from the thousand buckets of wine it yielded in good years. Your guide explains how the terraces with their dry-stone walls were built and why they matter so much for the microclimate.
Above the village stand the ruins of Hinterhaus Castle, with views over vineyards and the Danube. In the village the shipping museum in the Erlahof tells how boats were once hauled upstream and how hard the boatmen worked.
The tour combines well with a ride on the river-current ferry to Arnsdorf or a wine tasting. The tour is private and priced per group.
