St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang is the birthplace of Mozart's mother Anna Maria Pertl and later became home to his sister Nannerl. This private walk blends family history with one of the loveliest lake villages in the Salzkammergut.
Anna Maria Pertl was born in 1720 in the district court house of St. Gilgen; the lakeside building is now known as the Mozart House. Her daughter Maria Anna, called Nannerl, married the local magistrate in 1784 and lived here for many years.
Letters between Nannerl and her father Leopold describe daily life by the lake and her famous brother's life in Vienna. Your guide reads short passages and shows where the family lived.
The village center with colorful houses, the church and the lakeside promenade invites you to linger. On request ride the cable car up the Zwölferhorn or take the boat to St. Wolfgang. In Advent, St. Gilgen is part of the Lake Wolfgang Christmas markets.
