Klosterneuburg Abbey: Babenbergs and the Verdun Altar

An abbey with imperial dreams just outside Vienna

Just a few kilometres north of Vienna stands Klosterneuburg Abbey with its distinctive domes. Your guide tells the story of a monastery between the Babenbergs and the Habsburgs.

Margrave Leopold III of the Babenberg dynasty founded the abbey early in the 12th century. He was later canonised and is the patron saint of Lower Austria and Vienna. Your guide tells you the legend of his wife Agnes's veil, which is said to have led to the founding.

The greatest treasure is the Verdun Altar, a masterpiece of goldsmith work by Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th century. In the 18th century Emperor Charles VI wanted to turn the abbey into an Austrian Escorial, but only part of the plan was realised. The domes still carry the imperial crown and the archducal hat.

We schedule the abbey's own guided visit for you. The tour is private and priced per group.
