Traisental Valley: Bike and Wine

From Herzogenburg Abbey through one of Austria's smallest wine regions

Traisental Valley: Bike and WineBikeNiederösterreich
Duration
3.0 hours
Languages
German, English

North of St. Pölten lies the Traisental, a wine region full of character and free of crowds. This bike tour combines monastic culture and Grüner Veltliner.

The Traisental cycle path follows the river on mostly level ground through meadows and fields. Your first stop is the Augustinian abbey of Herzogenburg, whose baroque buildings were created with the involvement of Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast. Your guide explains how the abbeys shaped winemaking in the region for centuries.

Then you ride on to the wine villages on the edge of the valley. On lean limestone soils grow mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with their own origin designation, Traisental DAC. Your guide shows you cellar lanes and explains the difference between a Heuriger and a regular inn.

Bikes or e-bikes can be rented or arranged for you on request. A tasting at a winery can gladly be included. The tour is private and priced per group.
