Untersberg: Cable Car, Summit Views and Legends
Salzburg's own mountain on the Austrian-Bavarian border

- Duration
- 3.0 hours
- Languages
- German, English
The Untersberg is Salzburg's home mountain and one of the most legend-filled peaks in the Alps. This private tour takes the cable car up to sweeping views over Salzburg, the foothills and the Berchtesgaden Alps.
From St. Leonhard near Grödig, the cable car glides up to about 1,800 meters in a few minutes. On a clear day the panorama stretches from the Chiemgau to the Dachstein, with Salzburg below like a model town.
The Untersberg is a limestone massif full of caves and shafts, so it is no surprise that many legends surround it. An emperor is said to sleep inside the mountain and will only wake when the ravens stop circling the summit.
On a short summit path to the Geiereck, your guide shares tales of wild women and dwarfs and explains the Untersberg marble used in many Salzburg buildings. Sturdy shoes are recommended, as the path is rocky.
