This day trip from Salzburg combines the mighty Hohenwerfen Castle with the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world. The private tour through the Salzach Valley is an adventure for families and nature lovers.
Hohenwerfen Castle was founded in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard on a rock above the Salzach and long served as a fortress and prison. At the historic falconry show, falconers fly eagles, falcons and vultures.
Across the valley in the Tennengebirge mountains lies the entrance to the Eisriesenwelt. The cave runs for more than 40 kilometers, and in its front section huge ice formations and frozen walls appear. Visitors explore by carbide lamp.
Reaching the cave involves a cable car and a mountain path with many steps, so sure footing and warm clothes are essential. Scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed near Werfen. Your guide plans the day with plenty of breaks.
