The Bregenzerwald is one of the best known cheese regions in the Alps, and its Cheese Road links farmers, dairies and innkeepers. This private half-day tour shows how mountain cheese is made and leads through villages of traditional timber houses.
Cheese has been made in the Bregenzerwald for centuries, and in summer farmers take their cattle up to the alpine pastures. The region largely avoids silage, so cows eat grass and hay, which gives the cheese its flavor.
At a village dairy you see raw milk turned into mountain cheese, and in the cheese cellar thousands of wheels mature. Your guide explains types such as Bergkäse, Alpkäse and the traditional Sura Kees, a lean sour milk cheese.
Along the way are villages like Egg, Andelsbuch and Lingenau with classic Bregenzerwald houses and modern timber architecture. A tasting of cheese and local products can be arranged on request and is paid on site.

Frequently asked questions
Are entrance fees included?
No. Entrance fees and tickets for cable cars, trains, boats or tastings are not included and are paid on site. Your guide is happy to tell you in advance what to expect.
Is the price per person or per group?
This is a private tour with a licensed Austrian tour guide. The price is per group, not per person, so it is just you and your own party.
When is the best time for the Cheese Road?
The dairies work all year. In summer many cows are up on the alps, and in autumn they return to the valley decorated for the festive cattle drive.
