Eisenstadt is small but rich in history. Your guide shows you how the Esterházy princes shaped the town over centuries.
At the centre stands Esterházy Palace, one of the most splendid baroque palaces in Austria. Your guide explains how the family rose to become one of the wealthiest in Hungary, why Eisenstadt belonged to Hungary until 1921 and how Burgenland then became part of Austria.
On the main street and in the old town lanes you see town houses, churches and traces of winemaking. A detour leads to the Bergkirche, where Joseph Haydn is buried, and to the former Jewish quarter of Unterberg, one of the Seven Communities under Esterházy protection.
The tour is a perfect introduction and can be combined with Haydn or a wine tasting. The tour is private and priced per group.
