Gmunden on Lake Traunsee combines a lakeside promenade, the island castle Schloss Ort and a long ceramics tradition. This private walk shows why the town became a favorite summer retreat of 19th century nobility.
For centuries Gmunden was home to the salt office that controlled the salt trade of the Salzkammergut. Later, aristocrats and wealthy families made it a summer resort, and grand villas along the promenade still recall that era.
Schloss Ort sits on a small island in the lake, reached by a long wooden bridge, with the striking Traunstein mountain opposite. Traunsee is the deepest lake in Austria.
Gmunden's green-flamed pottery is known throughout Austria, and the town hall has a carillon made of ceramic bells. Your guide shares stories of pottery, salt and famous summer guests. Afterward, browse a ceramics shop in the old town or ride the Traunsee tram.
