A Danube town with a castle, a theatre and a perilous past

Grein lies where the Danube enters the narrow Strudengau gorge. Your guide shows you a small town shaped by river shipping and its dangers.
For centuries the Strudengau was one of the most feared stretches of the Danube. Rocks, rapids and whirlpools put boats in danger, and in Grein pilots waited to guide them safely through. Your guide explains how this danger made the town wealthy and how it vanished with blasting works and a hydroelectric dam.
On the town square lies a special treasure: the historic town theatre, regarded as the oldest civic theatre in Austria still in use. Above the town rises Greinburg Castle, one of the oldest residential palaces in the country and home to the Upper Austrian Shipping Museum.
The tour works well as a shore excursion or a stop on a Danube journey. The tour is private and priced per group.
