Imperial Bad Ischl

Summer retreat, Imperial Villa and the engagement of Franz Joseph and Sisi

Imperial Bad IschlHighlightsOberösterreich
Duration
1.5 hours
Languages
German, English

For more than six decades Emperor Franz Joseph spent his summers in Bad Ischl. Your guide shows how the spa town became a meeting place for court, aristocracy and artists.

In 1853 the young emperor became engaged to his cousin Elisabeth in Bad Ischl. The Imperial Villa was a wedding gift and remained his favourite summer residence. Your guide tells you about hunting trips, court life in the countryside and the fact that Franz Joseph signed the declaration of war on Serbia here in 1914.

In town you meet the culture of the summer retreat: the Pump Room, the Esplanade along the Traun river and villas where composers like Franz Lehár lived. The brine that turned the town into a spa is still part of local life.

Together with the Salzkammergut region, Bad Ischl was European Capital of Culture in 2024. A guided visit inside the Imperial Villa can be scheduled on request. The tour is private and priced per group.
