Mariazell: Basilica, Shrine and Gingerbread

Austria's most important pilgrimage site

Mariazell: Basilica, Shrine and GingerbreadTopicSteiermark
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

This private tour of Mariazell opens up the basilica, its revered statue of the Virgin and the long history of Austria's foremost pilgrimage site. It also covers stories of pilgrims from across Central Europe and the sweet side of town, Mariazell gingerbread.

According to tradition, a monk named Magnus brought a small statue of Mary into the valley in 1157 and so founded the shrine. For centuries pilgrims from Austria, Hungary, the Czech lands and beyond have come to visit the 'Magna Mater Austriae'.

The basilica combines a Gothic core with Baroque splendor, and inside stands the Chapel of Grace with the venerated statue. Your guide explains votive offerings, the treasury and pilgrimage customs, and also shows you the town around the main square with its gingerbread bakers and herbal liqueur traditions.

This is a private tour: just your own group, your pace and plenty of time for questions. Our licensed guides are happy to adjust the focus to your interests before the day.

How is the price calculated?

This is a private tour, so you pay one price per group, not per person. The amount depends on the duration and group size, and you receive a quote with your request.
