Mauthausen: Market Town on the Danube
Toll station, granite and river trade in an old Danube town

Mauthausen is known worldwide for its memorial, but the town itself has a long history as a Danube market. Your guide shows you this other side.
The name says it all: in the Middle Ages a toll, or Maut, was levied here on goods shipped along the Danube. Your guide explains how customs, salt trade and shipping made the town prosper and why granite from the area was carried all the way to Vienna.
On the market square and along the riverbank you see painted town houses and Pragstein Castle, built on a rock right by the water. The town's 20th-century history is not left out, but this walk only touches on it.
The walk combines well with a visit to the concentration camp memorial or with Enns. The tour is private and priced per group.
