Mondsee is famous around the world for the wedding scene in The Sound of Music, filmed in St. Michael's Basilica. This private walk also explores more than 1,250 years of monastic history and the World Heritage pile dwellings.
Mondsee Abbey was founded around 748 and was one of the oldest monasteries in present-day Austria. Its monks produced precious manuscripts and shaped farming and culture in the region.
St. Michael's Basilica, with its yellow facade and Baroque altars by Meinrad Guggenbichler, is one of the largest churches in Upper Austria. In 1964 the wedding of Maria and Captain von Trapp was filmed here.
Long before the abbey, people lived in pile dwellings on the lakeshore. The Mondsee culture gave its name to a Neolithic period and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your guide links film, faith and prehistory.
