Riegersburg: Castle on a Volcanic Rock
Fortress, witch trials and views over the Volcano Land

This private tour takes you up to Riegersburg Castle, perched on a steep basalt rock above Styria's Volcano Land. You will hear why the fortress was considered impregnable and what dark chapters the witch trials left behind here.
The rock of Riegersburg is the remnant of an extinct volcano, which made the castle one of the strongest fortresses on the border with Hungary. In the 17th century the baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Galler expanded it to its present size.
Your guide walks you up the steep castle path through several gates and tells of sieges, castle life and the regional witch trials, including the story of Katharina Paldauf. At the top you are rewarded with a wide view over hills, vineyards and volcanic cones toward Slovenia and Hungary.
This is a private tour: just your own group, your pace and plenty of time for questions. Our licensed guides are happy to adjust the focus to your interests before the day.

Frequently asked questions
Are entrance fees included?
No. Entrance fees for the castle and the castle lift are not included in the tour price and are paid on site. Your guide will let you know in advance which tickets you will need.
How is the price calculated?
This is a private tour, so you pay one price per group, not per person. The amount depends on the duration and group size, and you receive a quote with your request.
Is there an alternative to the steep climb?
Yes, an inclined lift runs up the castle rock. It is a good option for guests who prefer not to walk the steep path; the ride is not included.
