Schärding on the Inn River is famous for the Silberzeile, a row of brightly painted houses that is among the most photographed in Austria. This private walk covers trade, border history and Baroque charm in a small river town.
The Silberzeile, or Silver Row, on the upper square takes its name from the wealth of the merchants who lived there. Each house has its own color, said to have once shown the owner's guild.
Schärding belonged to Bavaria for centuries and only became Austrian in 1779. Town gates like the Linz Gate and the Water Gate, the castle remains and the view across the Inn to Germany tell of this border location.
After a great fire, Schärding was rebuilt in Baroque style. Your guide leads you to the parish church, through narrow lanes and down to the Inn, where river shipping once brought prosperity.
