This private food excursion takes you through the Styrian Volcano Land in southeastern Styria, rolling hills formed by extinct volcanoes. You visit small producers and wine villages and learn why the volcanic soil makes local food and wine so distinctive.
Millions of years ago volcanoes were active here; today cones, castles and vineyards shape the landscape. The Volcano Land has made a name for itself as a food region: pumpkin seed oil, air-dried ham, vinegar, chocolate and fruit brandies are made by small family businesses.
Your guide weaves together landscape, history and food, for instance in Straden, a village with several churches on one hill, and in Klöch, known for its Traminer wine. Along the way you see castles on volcanic rocks such as Kapfenstein and hear how a border region turned into a gourmet destination.
