Steyr in Upper Austria is one of Austria's best preserved medieval towns, set where the Enns and Steyr rivers meet. This private walk tells how iron from the Erzberg mountain made the town rich.
For centuries Steyr was a hub of the iron trade. Ore from the Erzberg in Styria came down the Enns and was forged here into blades, scythes and tools. The wealth of the merchants still shows on the painted facades.
The long main square is home to the Gothic Bummerlhaus, one of Austria's most famous townhouses, next to the Baroque town hall. Lamberg Castle rises above, and across the water lies the old Ennsdorf quarter with a view of the river point.
In the 19th century Josef Werndl turned Steyr into an arms manufacturing center, and the town was among the first in Europe with electric street lighting. Your guide ties these chapters together into one vivid story.
