Wels in Upper Austria was the Roman town of Ovilava and the place where Emperor Maximilian I died in 1519. This private walk brings 2,000 years of history to life around its grand town square.
The Romans founded Ovilava on the Traun River, and under Emperor Diocletian it became capital of the province of Noricum Ripense. Remains of the town wall and finds in the city museum tell its story.
In the Middle Ages Wels grew into a prosperous trading town. The wide main square with its merchant houses, the Ledererturm as the last surviving town gate and the parish church still reflect that wealth.
Emperor Maximilian I, known as the last knight, spent his final days in Wels Castle and died here in January 1519. Your guide explains why Wels became his place of death and how the town later turned into a trade fair hub.
