This private walking tour tells Vienna's story through the women who changed the city and the world. From ruler Maria Theresa to physicist Lise Meitner, you meet some truly courageous lives.
Maria Theresa ruled for four decades from 1740 and reformed schools, administration and the army. Yet many important Viennese women stayed in the shadows for a long time. Bertha von Suttner wrote the novel Lay Down Your Arms and in 1905 became the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Women were only allowed to study at the University of Vienna from 1897. Lise Meitner was among the first female physicists and helped discover nuclear fission. Rosa Mayreder fought for women's rights, Emilie Flöge ran a fashion salon, and Vienna-born Hedy Lamarr became a movie star and inventor. In 1918 Austrian women won the right to vote.
Your guide links places in the old town with biographies and shows how women shaped politics, science, art and everyday life in Vienna.
