This private tour of the Museum of Military History in Vienna tells Austria's story from the 16th century to 1945. The highlight is the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo in 1914.
The museum is housed in the Arsenal, a barracks and armory complex built after the revolution of 1848. With its magnificent Hall of Fame, the museum building is considered the oldest purpose-built museum in Vienna.
The collection leads from the Ottoman wars through Prince Eugene and Maria Theresa to the Napoleonic Wars. In the World War I room you see the car and the bloodstained uniform of Franz Ferdinand, witnesses of the assassination that sparked the war. Other rooms cover the end of the monarchy, the First Republic and the Nazi era.
Your guide puts the objects into critical context, tells the stories of the people behind the uniforms and shows how wars shaped Austria's borders and society.
