This private tour in Vienna's Landstrasse district introduces Friedensreich Hundertwasser and his architecture. You see the famous Hundertwasser House, hear about trees growing on roofs and learn why the artist rejected straight lines.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born in Vienna in 1928, was a painter, architect and environmental activist. He fought against gray, uniform buildings and called for homes where trees could live and floors could be uneven.
Between 1983 and 1985 he created the Hundertwasser House together with architect Josef Krawina, a city housing block with colorful facades, onion domes and green terraces. People still live there today.
Just a few steps away is the Kunst Haus Wien, a former factory turned museum with works by the artist. Your guide tells you about Hundertwasser's manifestos, his travels and ships, and on request also shows you the colorful facade of the Spittelau waste incineration plant that he redesigned later.
