Lainzer Tiergarten and Hermesvilla: Sisi's Forest Retreat
A nature walk in the former imperial hunting ground

This private nature walk in the Lainzer Tiergarten combines the Vienna Woods, wildlife and imperial history. The goal is the Hermesvilla, built by Emperor Franz Joseph for Empress Elisabeth.
The Lainzer Tiergarten on Vienna's western edge was an imperial hunting ground for centuries. A wall many kilometers long still surrounds it. For a long time now it has been open to everyone as a nature reserve and part of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve.
Old oaks and beeches, meadows and streams shape the landscape. With a little luck you see wild boar, deer or mouflon. In the middle of the forest stands the Hermesvilla, which Franz Joseph had built for Elisabeth in the 1880s to designs by Carl von Hasenauer. Sisi called it her palace of dreams but rarely came.
Your guide explains the nature, hunting history and the empress's life, and shows you quiet paths through one of the city's most beautiful forests.
