Sigmund Freud and the Vienna of the Mind

Psychoanalysis, medicine and science in the Alsergrund district

Sigmund Freud and the Vienna of the MindTopicWien
Duration
2.0 hours
Languages
German, English

This private tour in Vienna's Alsergrund district follows Sigmund Freud from the university to Berggasse 19. You learn why Vienna around 1900 became the cradle of psychoanalysis and modern medicine.

Sigmund Freud lived and worked at Berggasse 19 for almost 50 years, from 1891 until he fled to London in 1938. Here he saw his patients, wrote The Interpretation of Dreams and developed psychoanalysis. Today the house is a museum.

The 9th district was already a quarter of science back then. Around the Old General Hospital, opened by Emperor Joseph II in 1784, famous doctors of the Vienna School of Medicine worked. The round Narrenturm is one of Europe's earliest buildings for the mentally ill.

Your guide tells you about Freud's coffeehouses, his colleagues and critics, his Jewish roots and his expulsion by the Nazis, and shows how his ideas still shape our thinking today.
