This private tour of St. Marx Cemetery in Vienna takes you to the city's only surviving Biedermeier cemetery. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was buried here in 1791, and many gravestones tell of Vienna in the early 19th century.
St. Marx Cemetery in the 3rd district was laid out under Emperor Joseph II, who banned burials inside the city walls. From 1784 to 1874 Viennese of every class were buried here, before the Central Cemetery took over.
Mozart was laid to rest in 1791 in a common grave, as was usual for most people at the time. The exact spot is unknown, and today a memorial with a mourning angel honors him. All around stand neoclassical and Biedermeier tombs, many with touching inscriptions.
Your guide explains Joseph II's burial reforms, shares the life stories behind the stones and clears up myths about Mozart's death. In spring the lilacs here are especially beautiful.
